Duties and Responsibilities  Benefits  Supplemental Questions 

Essential Job Functions:  Oversees animal custodial and remedial care, admissions, adoption and euthanasia; ensures the safety, sanitation, and upkeep of the facility; provides staff training, prepares operational reports, serves as the on-site spokesperson to the media for the shelter, and educates the public about responsible pet ownership. Ensures compliance with all City, State and Federal laws regarding animal care and adoption. Coordinates educational outreach programs and make presentations to schools, civic groups, public agencies and related groups; and develops a comprehensive marketing program for the Shelter and Adoption Center.

Other Job Functions:
  Takes complaints by telephone; discusses problems with citizens; checks all animals in shelter several times daily for well-being; other duties as assigned.

 Working Conditions:

Works inside and outside in all types of weather conditions; is exposed to extreme cold and heat; works around all types of animal; is exposed to the possibility of bodily injury and communicable diseases due to animal bites and scratches; must comply with department’s immunization policy.

 Minimum Essential Qualifications:

Knowledge:  Knowledge of the operation of an animal shelter; knowledge of public laws that apply to animals; knowledge of safety practices; knowledge of animal shelters and animal control as an agency.

  Work in an environment which contains fumes or airborne particles. Handle animals which are sick or injured, frightened or dangerous animals who may display unpredictable behavior. Manage the mental and emotional stress that may accompany the euthanasia of animal; ability to communicate effectively with the public and media; ability to speak, read and write the English language; ability to develop a marketing campaign that promotes the shelter and adoption program.

Physical Requirements:
 Constantly sees and hears; frequently operates a calculator, carries, drags, and holds objects weighing up to 80lbs., performs data entry, twists body, walks, drives, stands, and writes by hand; infrequently climbs, files, lifts, pushes, and pulls objects weighing up to 80 lbs., runs, sits, sorts, squats, stoops.

 Graduation from high school or equivalent required; advanced T.D.H. certification as animal control officer preferred; supervisory experience required; experience in the operation of an animal shelter preferred.


Minimum starting annual salary is $40,000.00.
