PT Animal Services Technician #4695 RP#2

 

Description

 

THIS POSITION CLOSES AUGUST 4, 2015 

Salary: $11.3280 - $14.1600 per hour. This part-time position will be located in the Animal Services Division of the Code and Compliance Services Department. 

Job Summary: Under general supervision, feeds and cares for animals at the Animal Services Center; responsible for micro chipping, vaccinating, and administering humane euthanasia to animals; responsible for cleaning and sanitizing animal kennels, pens, and holding cages. 

Essential Functions: 
1. Provide and ensure the humane welfare and care of animals by providing food and water in accordance with established policies and practices. 
2. Maintain a healthy environment by properly cleaning and disinfecting animal cages in accordance with established disease control policies and practices. 
3. Humanely euthanize animals and maintain accurate written records of controlled substances in accordance with Federal laws. 
4. Respond to and provide appropriate medical treatment such as: taking vitals, administering medications, and first aid to animals. 
5. Receive animals and maintain associated paperwork such as an inventory log, animal identification and location records, and related medical treatment records. 
6. Perform minor medical procedures including but not limited to vaccinating and micro chipping. 

Other Job Functions: 
5. Observe animals to detect indications of disease and respond according as defined in established policies and practices. 
6. Maintain grounds, repair or replace broken kennel gates, kennel dividers, cables and pulleys. 
7. Remove litter and debris, wash feeding/watering utensils, and equipment, launder towels, blankets, beds, etc., maintain stock and storage rooms in a neat and organized manner, stock inventory of food, litter, cleaning supplies etc., and perform minor equipment/kennel repairs. 
8. Operate a motor vehicle in order to transport, load, and unload items including but not limited to food, animal carcasses, animal items, cat litter, carriers, animals, etc. 

Ideal Incumbent Possesses: 
Knowledge of: 
-The principles and practices of disease control. 
-The symptoms of animal diseases, basic animal behavior, care, and first aid. 
-The methods and techniques of performing humane euthanasia to a variety of animals. 
-The breeds behavior and husbandry of domestic and wild animals. 

Skill in: 
-Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with work associates and the public. 
-Communicating with other city employees and the public by oral and written means. 
-Administration of euthanasia to animals. 
-Managing multiple tasks. 

Ability to: 
-Work effectively when surrounded by loud noise. 
-Receive detailed information through oral communication, and make fine discriminations in sound. 
-Perform a variety of physical skills including but not limited to seeing, sorting, typing, writing, euthanasia, dragging, carrying, kneeling and animal restraint. 
-Lift or exert forces equivalent to lifting up to 50 pounds. 
-Operate a variety of equipment including but not limited to motor vehicles, water hoses, restraining equipment and euthanasia equipment such as needles, drugs and tourniquets. 
-Read labels on medical containers. 
-Work in both indoor and outdoor environments. 
-Keep and prepare accurate records. 
-Work independent of specific instruction. 
-Operate a variety of office equipment including, but not limited to PC, and copier. 

Incumbent is subject to chemical hazards, dust, odor, zoonotic and mites hazards. 

Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion pre-placement criminal background check, physical, and drug screen. Possession of a valid Texas Operator's License, Class C. Certified Euthanasia Technician Certification in accordance with Chapter 821 of the Texas Health and Safety Code.
