Summary

TYPICAL HIRING RANGE:
$16.29 - $19.95 Hourly
$1,303.09 - $1,596.28 Biweekly

Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to enforce the city ordinance regarding animal control. Employees in this classification perform technical and skilled level work. Position is responsible for addressing owner responsibility; nuisance complaints; hurt, stray, or unwanted animals and wildlife. Enforces state laws pertaining to rabies.   Performs related work as required.

Essential Functions/Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

1.     Comply with all written City policies and procedures.

 

2.     Adhere to assigned work schedule as outlined in City and department attendance policies and procedures.

 

3.     Responds to public on calls regarding: stray, hurt or unwanted animals or wildlife; loose livestock; and, removal of deceased animals.

 

4.     Responds to public on nuisance calls regarding barking dogs or unusual smells.

 

5.     Issues citations for ordinance violations.

 

6.     Responds to, and investigates, cases of cruelty to animals.

 

7.     Sets for traps for animals and appropriately handles animals once in possession.

 

8.     Enforces state rabies laws; educates and informs the public if rabies is detected or suspected.

 

9.     Works with the general public to provide information and education on animal control.

 

10. Assists with administering shots, euthanasia, and performing related duties.

8.   Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information, such as city ordinance and the Texas Department of Health's Health and Safety Code regarding the enforce of the Rabies Act.
 

9.   Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
 

10. Requires ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
 

11. Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.
 

12. Requires the ability to perform coordinated movements involving placing and turning motions, such as utilizing a snake tongs, restraint poles, traps, tranquilizer guns and syringes/needles (euthanasia).
 

13. The ability to pass a background, physical and drug screen.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required. Requires Basic Animal Control and Euthanasia certifications, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. Must have the ability to pass a physical appropriate to the physical demands of this position. Must possess and maintain a Class C Driver's License in good standing. This position requires being on call on a rotating schedule and must be able to respond to call outs within 30 minutes.May be required to receive rabies pre-exposure vaccinations.

 

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Bi-Lingual (Spanish-English) preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
 

Between one and two-thirds of on the job time: Sitting; Talking; Hearing; Lifting and/or exerting force up to one-hundred plus (one hundred plus) pounds.
 

Under one-third of on the job time: Standing; Walking; Using one's hands to touch, handle or feel objects; Reaching with hands and arms; Climbing or balancing; Stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; Tasting/smelling.
 

Special vision requirements include: Close vision; Distance vision; Color vision; Peripheral vision; Depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
 

WORK ENVIRONMENT
 

Between one and two-thirds of on the job time: Exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
 

Under one-third of on the job time: Exposure to: Non-weather extreme cold, heat, wet or humid conditions; Working in high, precarious places; Exposure to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
